Harnessing the Healing
Power of Light Therapy

Sun exposure, genetics, and the inevitable effects of aging can leave our skin spotted, wrinkled, and aged in appearance more than we might feel. But what one form of light causes, another form of light can repair. Intense pulse light (IPL) photofacials use bursts of light energy to reduce or eliminate discolorations, age spots, sun damage, freckles, and even spider veins.

IPL procedures can be used to improve the appearance of the skin nearly anywhere on the body, delivering lifelong results without invasive methods. Together with a comprehensive, at-home skin care routine, IPL procedures provide smoother, even skin tones for a more youthful and natural look.

How Intense Pulse Light (IPL) Therapy Works

Skin discolorations are often the result of damaged or darkly pigmented skin cells that have clumped together. IPL therapy (often called a photofacial) works by using certain wavelengths of pulsating light to target and break up these discolorations.

Intense pulse light energy is absorbed as heat by certain blemishes and discolorations in the skin. The process disperses darker skin cell groupings while leaving the surrounding skin unharmed. IPL photofacials can also be used to treat old birthmarks, rosacea redness, and spider veins.

Unlike focused laser treatments (which use only one wavelength of light) our Intense Pulse Light (IPL) procedure uses various wavelengths to treat numerous, unwanted features such as:

  • Age spots
  • Fine wrinkles
  • Freckles
  • Rosacea redness
  • Spider veins
  • Unwanted birthmarks
  • Acne spots

For the best and longest-lasting results, multiple treatments may be required. We’ll discuss your customized plan in our free consultation.

IPL FAQ

IPL treatments permanently disband the darker clumps and discolorations in your skin. This does not mean that your skin can’t be damaged in the same ways later on. At Skin Dynamics, we’ll work with you to develop a skin care routine with a focus on preventing sun damage so that you can ensure the longest-lasting results from IPL treatments.

IPL treatments are generally pain and discomfort free for most patients. Patients can expect to feel a little heat from the bursts of intense light—an experience that most patients say resembles a rubber band snapping on the skin. Topical cooling gels may be applied to lessen the sensation of heat in the treated area, but generally, the procedure is comfortable and painless.

In the two weeks before your IPL appointment, it’s wise to avoid direct sunlight as much as possible. Patients should also refrain from other cosmetic or dermatologic procedures such as chemical peels, collagen injections, waxing, tanning, certain creams, and some medications that may contribute to an increased risk of skin sensitivity. During your consultation, we’ll speak to you about preparations for your IPL appointment so that you know exactly what to do.
